As most of you know, the state’s budget situation is once again in need of serious attention. Almost before the ink was dry on the two-year budget passed by the Legislature this spring, we saw revenue collections take a dive and the prospect of another budget shortfall became eminent. After September’s revenue forecast showed the state could be facing a nearly $2 billion shortfall by the end of the biennium, Governor Christine Gregoire announced a 30-day special session to begin on Nov. 28.
While much of the focus is on the state’s budget, we can’t forget that people need jobs. When folks are back to work and more jobs are created, the state will have more revenue to provide the services the public expects.
I have spent several days travelling around the 8th legislative district speaking with small business owners and community leaders to gather ideas about how we can get Washington working again. I am hopeful that we can take some of these ideas to my Olympia colleagues and turn them into legislative proposals to help spur economic growth in our state.
But I also know there are other issues that are important to you. That’s why I’m once again hosting some local “coffees” to hear from constituents. I’d like to invite you to participate if you are able. Come ready to express your ideas, ask questions and engage in constructive debate on the economy, jobs, the state’s budget, education, higher education, or any other topic of interest.
Please feel free to pass this information on to others you think might be interested. I look forward to seeing you there.
Sincerely,

Larry Haler
